The Toronto Islands: The Best Half-Day You Are Probably Skipping

A 13-minute ferry and you are in a car-free park with the best skyline view in Canada.

The Toronto Islands are a chain of small islands a short ferry ride from downtown. Centre Island is the family-friendly hub with a small amusement park. Ward's Island has a tiny year-round residential community and a quiet beach. Hanlan's Point has the original lighthouse and a clothing-optional beach.

The skyline view from the Islands is the image you have seen on every Toronto postcard. Bring a picnic, rent a bike at Centre, and budget at least four hours including the ferry.

Ferries run from the Jack Layton Terminal at the foot of Bay Street. Buy tickets online to skip the queue in summer. Last ferry back is usually around 11:30 pm — don't get stranded after a sunset cocktail.
